C’era una volta il West è un film del 1968 diretto da Sergio Leone. È un western all’italiana di tonalità epica prodotto dalla Paramount Pictures e interpretato da Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards e Charles Bronson. La sceneggiatura venne scritta da Leone e Sergio Donati, da un soggetto ideato da Leone, Bernardo Bertolucci e Dario Argento. Il film venne fotografato da Tonino Delli Colli e musicato da Ennio Morricone. È il primo episodio della trilogia del tempo di Leone, che proseguirà con Giù la testa (1971) e C’era una volta in America (1984).

La versione originale del regista era lunga 165 minuti quando il film uscì il 21 dicembre 1968. Questa versione venne proiettata nelle sale cinematografiche europee, e fu un successo al botteghino. Per l’uscita negli Stati Uniti il 28 maggio 1969, C’era una volta il West venne tagliato dalla Paramount fino a una durata di 145 minuti, ricevendo un’accoglienza critica per lo più negativa e fallendo finanziariamente. Il film è oggi considerato tra i migliori mai realizzati.

TRAMA:

Sweetwater, un pezzo di terra vicino a Flagstone (un’immaginaria città del West), contiene l’unica fonte d’acqua della regione, ed è al centro di un conflitto. Il terreno è stato acquistato da Brett McBain, il quale prevedeva che la ferrovia transcontinentale in costruzione sarebbe dovuta passare attraverso quella zona per avere l’acqua necessaria alle locomotive a vapore. Quando il magnate delle ferrovie Morton ne viene a conoscenza, manda il suo sicario Frank a intimidire semplicemente McBain per andarsene dalla terra, ma Frank invece uccide McBain e i suoi tre figli, lasciando delle prove per incriminare il bandito Cheyenne. Sembra che la terra non abbia più alcun proprietario; tuttavia, un’ex prostituta arriva da New Orleans, rivelando di essere Jill McBain, la nuova moglie di Brett e proprietaria del terreno.

Nel frattempo, un misterioso pistolero che suona un’armonica a bocca, in seguito soprannominato “Armonica” da Cheyenne, è alla ricerca di Frank. Dopo aver eliminato tre uomini che Frank aveva inviato ad ucciderlo, arriva in una locanda sulla strada per Sweetwater, dove informa Cheyenne che i tre pistoleri sembravano spacciarsi come suoi uomini.

A Sweetwater vengono consegnati dei materiali per costruire una stazione ferroviaria e una piccola città. Armonica spiega che Jill perderà Sweetwater a meno che la stazione non venga terminata prima che la squadra di costruzione della ferrovia raggiunga quel punto, così Cheyenne mette i suoi uomini a lavorare per costruirla.

Frank si ribella a Morton, che voleva fare un accordo con Jill. Morton è paralizzato e incapace di reagire. Dopo averla violentata, Frank costringe Jill a vendere la proprietà all’asta. Egli cerca di comprare la fattoria a buon mercato intimidendo gli altri offerenti, ma Armonica arriva con Cheyenne e fa un’offerta molto più elevata basata sulla ricompensa per la consegna di Cheyenne alle autorità. Armonica respinge l’offerta di Frank di comprargli la fattoria a un dollaro in più di quanto pagato all’asta.

Gli uomini di Frank lo tradiscono e gli tendono un agguato, essendo stati pagati da Morton per rivoltarsi contro di lui, ma – con grande indignazione di Jill – Armonica aiuta Frank a ucciderli, al solo scopo di tenere quel privilegio per se stesso.

Morton e gli altri uomini di Frank vengono uccisi in uno scontro con la banda di Cheyenne. Frank poi va a Sweetwater per affrontare Armonica. In due occasioni Frank aveva chiesto ad Armonica chi è, ma entrambe le volte Armonica aveva misteriosamente citato i nomi di uomini che Frank aveva ucciso. Questa volta, Armonica dice che rivelerà chi è “solo sul punto di morire”. I due uomini si preparano per un duello, e a questo punto il motivo di vendetta di Armonica viene rivelato in un flashback.

Quando Armonica era un ragazzo, un giovane Frank, già bandito crudele, lo aveva costretto a tenere in piedi sulle spalle il fratello adulto mentre quest’ultimo aveva un cappio intorno al collo. Mentre il ragazzo lottava per sostenere il peso di suo fratello, Frank gli aveva messo un’armonica in bocca. Alla fine il fratello maggiore, dopo aver maledetto il suo assassino, aveva spinto con i piedi il ragazzo per evitargli la responsabilità della sua morte: lui rimane impiccato alla campana del villaggio mentre Armonica crolla a terra.

Armonica estrae la pistola per primo e spara a Frank. In punto di morte, Frank chiede nuovamente ad Armonica chi egli sia: quest’ultimo mette l’armonica in bocca a Frank, che, riconoscendolo, annuisce debolmente, per morire subito dopo. Armonica e Cheyenne dicono addio a Jill, che sta supervisionando la costruzione della stazione ferroviaria mentre la squadra della ferrovia raggiunge Sweetwater. Cheyenne crolla, rivelando che era stato colpito mortalmente durante lo scontro con la banda di Frank dal magnate Morton. Il treno di lavoro arriva e Jill porta l’acqua ai lavoratori ferroviari, mentre Armonica cavalca via con il corpo di Cheyenne.

C’era una volta il West is a 1968 film directed by Sergio Leone. It is an epic-colored Italian western produced by Paramount Pictures and starring Claudia Cardinale, Henry Fonda, Jason Robards and Charles Bronson. The screenplay was written by Leone and Sergio Donati, by a subject created by Leone, Bernardo Bertolucci and Dario Argento. The film was photographed by Tonino Delli Colli and music by Ennio Morricone. It is the first episode of the trilogy of the time of Leone, which will continue with Giù la testa (1971) and  C’era una volta in America (1984).

The director’s original version was 165 minutes long when the film was released on December 21, 1968. This version was screened in European cinemas, and was a hit at the box office. For release in the United States on May 28, 1969, Once upon a time the West was cut from the Paramount until a duration of 145 minutes, receiving a critical reception mostly negative and failing financially. The film is today considered among the best ever made.

PLOT:

Sweetwater, a piece of land near Flagstone (an imaginary West Town), contains the only water source in the region, and is at the center of a conflict. The land was purchased by Brett McBain, who foresaw that the transcontinental railway under construction would have to go through that area to get the water needed for steam locomotives. When the morton magnate Morton learns of it, he sends his assassin Frank to intimidate McBain simply to leave the ground, but Frank instead kills McBain and his three sons, leaving evidence to indict the Cheyenne bandit. It seems that the earth no longer has any owner; however, a former prostitute arrives from New Orleans, revealing that she is Jill McBain, Brett’s new wife and owner of the land.

Meanwhile, a mysterious gunman playing a harmonica, later nicknamed “Harmonica” by Cheyenne, is looking for Frank. After eliminating three men whom Frank had sent to kill him, he arrives at an inn on the road to Sweetwater, where he informs Cheyenne that the three gunslingers seemed to pass themselves off as his men.

In Sweetwater, materials are delivered to build a railway station and a small town. Harmonica explains that Jill will lose Sweetwater unless the station is finished before the railroad construction team reaches that point, so Cheyenne puts her men to work to build it.

Frank rebels against Morton, who wanted to make an agreement with Jill. Morton is paralyzed and unable to react. After raping her, Frank forces Jill to sell the property at auction. He tries to buy the cheap farm by intimidating the other bidders, but Armonica arrives with Cheyenne and makes a much higher offer based on the reward for the delivery of Cheyenne to the authorities. Harmonica rejects Frank’s offer to buy him the farm for a dollar more than he paid for the auction.

Frank’s men betray him and ambush him, having been paid by Morton to turn against him, but – to Jill’s great indignation – Harmonica helps Frank to kill them, for the sole purpose of keeping that privilege for himself.

Morton and Frank’s other men are killed in a fight with the Cheyenne gang. Frank then goes to Sweetwater to face Harmonica. On two occasions Frank had asked Armonica who he is, but both times Armonica had mysteriously quoted the names of men Frank had killed. This time, Armonica says that she will reveal who she is “just about to die”. The two men are preparing for a duel, and at this point the motive of Harmonic revenge is revealed in a flashback.

When Armonica was a boy, a young Frank, already a cruel bandit, had forced him to hold his adult brother on his shoulders while the latter had a noose around his neck. As the boy struggled to support his brother’s weight, Frank had put a harmonica in his mouth. Eventually the older brother, after cursing his murderer, had pushed the boy with his feet to avoid the responsibility of his death: he hanged himself from the village bell while Harmonica collapses to the ground.

Harmonica pulls the gun first and shoots Frank. On the verge of death, Frank again asks Armonica who he is: the latter puts the harmonica in the mouth of Frank, who, recognizing it, nods weakly, to die soon after. Harmonica and Cheyenne say goodbye to Jill, who is overseeing the construction of the train station while the railroad team reaches Sweetwater. Cheyenne collapses, revealing that he had been mortally struck during the clash with Frank’s band by mogul Morton. The work train arrives and Jill takes the water to the railway workers, while Harmonica rides away with Cheyenne’s body.
