Gerardo Sasso (San Pietro di Scala, 1040 circa – Gerusalemme, 3 settembre 1120) è stato un monaco cristiano italiano, nel 1099 fondò l’ordine degli Ospitalieri di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme e nel 1113 ne fu il primo gran maestro; è stato proclamato beato della Chiesa cattolica.
Biografia
Di origine amalfitana, Gerardo dirigeva la foresteria (hospitium, ospitale) nel monastero benedettino di Santa Maria Latina in Gerusalemme, ricostruito attorno al 1070 dai ricchi mercanti italiani de Comite Maurone immediatamente a sud del Santo Sepolcro per accogliere i numerosi pellegrini in visita ai Luoghi Santi. Con la Prima crociata (1099) l’ospedale di San Giovanni si rese indipendente e nel 1113 ottenne il riconoscimento del pontefice Pasquale II attraverso la bolla Pie postulatio voluntatis. Gli antichi racconti sui primordi degli Ospitalieri narrano di un coinvolgimento di Gerardo, nel contesto di una narrazione agiografica, durante l’assedio crociato di Gerusalemme. Nel corso degli anni, il prepositus e rector Gerardo raccolse generose offerte e donazioni trasformando l’antico ospizio in un vero e proprio ordine, ramificato in domus sempre più numerose sparse tra l’Europa e l’Oltremare. In questi anni, l’ordine rimase un’istituzione squisitamente assistenziale. Dopo la caduta di Gerusalemme (1187) e quella di Acri (1291), l’ordine di San Giovanni di Gerusalemme si trasferì a Cipro, poi a Rodi e in età moderna a Malta, fino all’arrivo di Napoleone e all’attuale ricollocamento.

On 3 September 2020, the Ministry of Development with the Italian Post Office issues two commemorative stamps of Blessed Gerardo Sasso, in the 900th anniversary of his death, relating to the values of tariff B and tariff B zone1, respectively corresponding to € 1.10 and € 1.15.

Gerardo Sasso (San Pietro di Scala, around 1040 – Jerusalem, 3 September 1120) was an Italian Christian monk, in 1099 he founded the order of the Hospitallers of San Giovanni di Gerusalemme and in 1113 he was the first gram master; he was proclaimed blessed by the Catholic Church.
Biography
Of Amalfi origin, Gerardo directed the guesthouse (hospitium, ospitale) in the Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria Latina in Gerusalemme, rebuilt around 1070 by the wealthy Italian merchants de Comite Maurone immediately south of the Holy Sepulcher to welcome the numerous pilgrims visiting the Holy Places . With the First Crusade (1099) the hospital of San Giovanni became independent and in 1113 obtained the recognition of Pope Pasquale II through the bull Pie postulatio voluntatis. The ancient tales of the origins of the Hospitallers tell of Gerard’s involvement, in the context of a hagiographic narrative, during the Crusader siege of Jerusalem. Over the years, the prepositus and rector Gerardo collected generous offers and donations, transforming the ancient hospice into a real order, branched into increasingly numerous domus scattered between Europe and the overseas. In these years, the order remained a purely welfare institution. After the fall of Jerusalem (1187) and that of Acre (1291), the order of St. John of Jerusalem moved to Cyprus, then to Rhodes and in modern times to Malta, until the arrival of Napoleon and the current relocation .
