Al nastro di partenza le proposte per l’EuroScience Open Forum 2020 in programma a Trieste dal 2 al 6 settembre 2020: i ricercatori potranno inviare i loro progetti relativi ai tre grandi temi del piu’ grande forum della ricerca europeo: il primo è il programma scientifico che comprende nove aree, il secondo sui rapporti tra scienza e impresa e il terzo sulle carriere scientifiche del futuro. Le proposte saranno selezionate da esperti internazionali.
“L’Esof e’ una straordinaria piattaforma multidisciplinare in cui scienza ricerca e cultura si confrontano con bisogni della societa’ e dei cittadini”, rileva Stefano Fantoni, Champion di Esof 2020 Trieste. E’ “un’occasione unica – aggiunge – in cui ricerca, tecnologia e innovazione possono confrontarsi tra loro e con i giovani per le loro carriere. Scienza, innovazione e sostenibilita’ sono i tre elementi chiave della manifestazione, che oggi si distingue anche per essere l’unico vero punto di discussione sul futuro del rapporto tra scienza ed Europa”.
Il programma scientifico comprende nove aree, a partire dall’acqua come patrimonio fondamentale per l’umanita’ e dalle sfide poste dall’intelligenza artificiale e dai big data, fino alle interazioni fra ricerca, etica, filosofia e giurisprudenza. Si esplorano anche le nuove frontiere della ricerca e le strategie per un futuro sostenibile, fino alla medicina personalizzata e alla diplomazia scientifica e alle smart city.
Le proposte relative al dialogo fra scienza e impresa riguardano quattro temi: dalla quarta rivoluzione industriale e dalle partnership fra pubblico e privato al dialogo fra universita’ e imprese.
Il settore dedicato alle carriere scientifiche accoglie le idee che delineano i fattori di successo che portano i ricercatori a spostarsi dall’accademia alla ricerca nelle aziende, l’educazione imprenditoriale e formazione
Sul palco dell’ESOF2020, EuroScience Open Forum, con una serie di incontri tra la comunità scientifica e i responsabili politici sulle implicazioni del Coronavirus su salute pubblica, economia e comunicazione. Ospiti di fama mondiale, tra cui Thomas Hartung, tossicologo dell’Università John Hopkins di Baltimora, Richard Horton, caporedattore di The Lancet, Sudip Parikh, CEO dell’American Association for the Advancement of Science, analizzeranno i diversi aspetti che riguardano la pandemia, comprese le sue conseguenze economiche.
La presentazione generale dell’ESOF rimane suddivisa in tre settori principali principali: il programma scientifico dedicato alla ricerca di frontiera e le sue implicazioni per la società; il programma Science to Business incentrato sul rapporto tra scienza e mondo degli affari; e il programma Science to Careers che copre opportunità di lavoro e carriera per il futuro.
Al centro dell’agenda del Forum alcuni dei temi sociali più urgenti di oggi, tra cui i cambiamenti climatici e la transizione verso un’economia verde. Altri panel si concentreranno sull’impatto dei supercomputer e dell’intelligenza artificiale sulla ricerca farmacologica di frontiera utilizzando principi attivi provenienti da prodotti naturali e sull’importanza di un hub europeo dedicato alle scienze della vita . Ci saranno anche sessioni sull’inquinamento, il trasferimento di tecnologia, la diplomazia scientifica e il ruolo cruciale nella promozione della coesistenza pacifica tra popoli e nazioni, svolto da infrastrutture su larga scala come il CERN a Ginevra, l’acceleratore di particelle SESAME in Giordania o SEEIIST – l’Istituto per le tecnologie sostenibili del Sud-Est europeo , che recentemente si è concentrato sul supporto per il trattamento dei tumori basato su particelle subatomiche.
Una parte significativa dell’ESOF sarà dedicata alle startup, al trasferimento tecnologico e al prossimo programma quadro di ricerca europeo, Horizon Europe. Una sessione sulla mobilità dei ricercatori e delle conoscenze organizzata da alcuni dei più prestigiosi istituti scientifici internazionali, tra cui l’Accademia tedesca delle scienze Leopoldina e la nostra Accademia dei Lincei, si occuperà di approfondire temi come la valorizzazione del capitale umano, la fuga dei cervelli e la mobilità. Ci sarà anche spazio per discutere di come il fattore umano influenzi lo sviluppo dell’industria 4.0 e di come promuovere l’imprenditoria femminile.
Diverse sessioni, in collaborazione con partner come Fincantieri, saranno dedicate all’economia blu, alla salvaguardia del mare come risorsa e al trasporto marittimo, sostenibile grazie a tecnologie legate all’uso dell’idrogeno.
Molti gli ospiti di prestigio che hanno aderito all’invito: dal matematico Alessio Figalli, vincitore della Fields Medal 2018 al direttore generale del CERN a Ginevra Fabiola Gianotti. E ancora, il direttore del Tecnopolo Umano di Milano, Iain Mattaj , l’immunologo e il ricercatore internazionale Alberto Mantovani, il climatologo tedesco Gerald Haug, il fisico e fondatore dell’Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia di Genova Roberto Cingolani, la professoressa di Harvard e una delle principali autorità mondiali sulle relazioni tra scienza e democrazia Sheila Jasanoff, l’editore scientifico del Financial Times Clive Cookson e il matematico francese ed ex presidente del Consiglio europeo della ricerca Jean-Pierre Bourguignon. Hanno confermato la loro presenza anche l’economista americano ed esperto di sviluppo sostenibile, politica e gestione della salute pubblica Jeffrey Sachs, l’economista premio Nobel Joseph Stiglitz, la virologa Ilaria Capua e l’architetto e urbanista olandese Rem Koolhass.
Tre testimonianze per ESOF2020 saranno inoltre presentate dall’astrofisica Marica Branchesi, dall’autore Paolo Giordano e dall’architetto Massimiliano Fuksas.
Alla cerimonia di apertura parteciperanno il commissario europeo per la Ricerca Mariya Gabriel, il ministro italiano dell’Università e della Ricerca Gaetano Manfredi e le sue controparti del Montenegro, Sanja Damjanovic e del Sudafrica, Emmanuel Nzimand. Annunciata anche la partecipazione del Governatore della Banca d’Italia Ignazio Visco e del Presidente del ConsiglioGiuseppe Conte.

The proposals for the EuroScience Open Forum 2020 scheduled in Trieste from 2 to 6 September 2020 are at the starting line: researchers will be able to send their projects relating to the three major themes of the largest European research forum: the first is the program science which includes nine areas, the second on the relationship between science and business and the third on the scientific careers of the future. Proposals will be selected by international experts.
“Esof is an extraordinary multidisciplinary platform in which science, research and culture are confronted with the needs of society and citizens”, notes Stefano Fantoni, Champion of Esof 2020 Trieste. It is “a unique opportunity – he adds – in which research, technology and innovation can confront each other and with young people for their careers. Science, innovation and sustainability are the three key elements of the event, which today also stands out for be the only real point of discussion on the future of the relationship between science and Europe “.
The scientific program includes nine areas, starting with water as a fundamental heritage for humanity and the challenges posed by artificial intelligence and big data, up to the interactions between research, ethics, philosophy and jurisprudence. The new frontiers of research and strategies for a sustainable future are also explored, up to personalized medicine and scientific diplomacy and smart cities.
The proposals relating to the dialogue between science and business concern four themes: from the fourth industrial revolution and from partnerships between public and private sectors to the dialogue between universities and businesses.
The science careers sector welcomes the ideas that outline the success factors that lead researchers to move from academia to corporate research, entrepreneurship education and training
On the stage of ESOF2020, EuroScience Open Forum, with a series of meetings between the scientific community and policy makers on the implications of the Coronavirus on public health, economy and communication. World-renowned guests, including Thomas Hartung, toxicologist at the John Hopkins University of Baltimore, Richard Horton, editor-in-chief of The Lancet, Sudip Parikh, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, will analyze the different aspects concerning the pandemic, including its economic consequences.
The general presentation of the ESOF remains divided into three main areas: the scientific program dedicated to frontier research and its implications for society; the Science to Business program focusing on the relationship between science and business; and the Science to Careers program which covers job and career opportunities for the future.
At the heart of the Forum’s agenda are some of today’s most pressing social issues, including climate change and the transition to a green economy. Other panels will focus on the impact of supercomputers and artificial intelligence on frontier drug research using active ingredients from natural products and the importance of a European hub dedicated to life sciences. There will also be sessions on pollution, technology transfer, science diplomacy and the crucial role in promoting peaceful coexistence between peoples and nations, played by large-scale infrastructures such as CERN in Geneva, the SESAME particle accelerator in Jordan o SEEIIST – the Southeast European Institute for Sustainable Technologies, which has recently focused on support for subatomic particle-based cancer treatment.
A significant part of ESOF will be dedicated to startups, technology transfer and the next European research framework program, Horizon Europe. A session on the mobility of researchers and knowledge organized by some of the most prestigious international scientific institutes, including the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina and our Accademia dei Lincei, will focus on issues such as the enhancement of human capital, the escape of brains and mobility. There will also be space to discuss how the human factor influences the development of industry 4.0 and how to promote female entrepreneurship.

Many prestigious guests have accepted the invitation: from the mathematician Alessio Figalli, winner of the Fields Medal 2018 to the director general of CERN in Geneva Fabiola Gianotti. The participation of the Governor of the Bank of Italy Ignazio Visco and the Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has also been announced. The event takes place in media partnership with RAI.
