Telethon in Italia

  • L’Istituto San Raffaele-Telethon per la Terapia Genica (TIGET) con sede a Milano e diretto da Luigi Naldini;
  • L’Istituto Telethon di Genetica e Medicina (TIGEM) con sede a Pozzuoli (Napoli) e diretto da Andrea Ballabio;

  • revisione: una seconda selezione fatta in base alle valutazioni sul singolo progetto di due scienziati stranieri privi di conflitti di interessi rispetto al progetto e in grado di fornire una valutazione specifica rispetto ai contenuti dello stesso;
  • valutazione finale: i progetti che hanno superato le prime due fasi sono presentati alla Commissione medico-scientifica, organo composto da 31 scienziati di fama internazionale, che seleziona i progetti che potranno essere finanziati;

Telethon (contraction of television marathon) is a television marathon born in 1965 in the United States of America on the initiative of the famous actor Jerry Lewis with the aim of raising funds for research on muscular dystrophy. Over the years the term has become general use and refers to any television broadcast lasting hours, or even days, aimed at collecting donations. The broadcast, of which analogues exist in many European countries, is made up of detachments of varieties, singers, musicians, comic actors and other artists and guests interspersed with requests for donations and journalistic analyzes. The most successful telethon in the world, as regards the funds raised, is the 25-hour broadcast in Western Australia directed by Seven Perth in favor of the Princess Margaret Children hospital in Perth.

Telethon in Italy

The Italian edition of Telethon was created in 1990 by Susanna Agnelli in collaboration with the Italian Union against Muscular Dystrophy (Uildm) to finance and promote scientific research on genetic diseases and rare diseases, to seek a cure for the disease of the child. With the funds raised, thanks to the television marathon of the same name broadcast on Rai networks, the collection initiatives, the network of partners and the network of volunteers in the area, the Telethon Foundation has discovered the cure for ADA-SCID, a disease that forced children who were affected by living in a sterile bubble (hence the term “bubble children”). Awarded the High Patronage of the President of the Republic, it is currently chaired by Luca Cordero di Montezemolo.

The Telethon foundation

The Telethon Foundation is a non-profit organization recognized by the Ministry of University and Scientific and Technological Research. The Foundation’s task is to manage and promote fundraising initiatives, manage the funds raised to be used for internal (at the institutes founded by Telethon) and external (at laboratories that host researchers who receive a scholarship) research activities. In particular, the institutes founded and managed directly by Telethon are:

• The San Raffaele-Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy (TIGET) based in Milan and directed by Luigi Naldini;

• The Telethon Institute of Genetics and Medicine (TIGEM) based in Pozzuoli (Naples) and directed by Andrea Ballabio;

• The Telethon Dulbecco Institute, a virtual institute named after the Nobel Prize for Medicine Renato Dulbecco.

Telethon research

Alongside the research activities carried out at these institutes, Telethon annually selects projects whose purpose is to study genetic diseases by assigning them to researchers housed in public and private structures. The selection of these projects follows the “peer review” procedure. All projects that have passed the administrative checks by the Telethon scientific office are subjected to an evaluation phase which includes:

• triage: a first skimming done by 3 members of the Telethon Medical-Scientific Commission

• review: a second selection made on the basis of the evaluations on the single project of two foreign scientists without conflicts of interest with respect to the project and able to provide a specific evaluation with respect to the contents of the same;

• final evaluation: the projects that have passed the first two phases are presented to the Medical-Scientific Commission, an organ composed of 31 internationally renowned scientists, who selects the projects that can be financed;

• financing: the Telethon Board of Directors approves the financing of projects based on the availability of funds.

Investments and research areas

At the 2014 budget, Telethon invested over 420 million euros in research, funded over 2,500 projects with over 1,500 researchers involved and more than 450 diseases studied. As of 2014, 371 Italian laboratories are involved in the realization of Telethon projects. There are over 9,800 publications in international scientific journals obtained by Telethon researchers.

Ada-Scid

It is the first hereditary disease to have been treated with gene therapy. The therapeutic strategy was developed at the Telethon Institute in Milan (Tiget) and the first result was achieved in 2002, when 16 children with the disease were treated. Through an agreement signed in October 2010 between Telethon and the pharmaceutical multinational GlaxoSmithKline, gene therapy for ADA-SCID will become a drug.

Metachromatic leukodystrophy and Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome

The first clinical trial of gene therapy for metachromatic leukodystrophy and for Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome, two genetic diseases, started in 2010 at the Telethon Institute of Milan (Tiget), in light of the positive results obtained in the animal model. For the benefit of the research, the alliance between Telethon and the pharmaceutical multinational Gsk was signed in October 2010. In 2013 the preliminary results of the experimentation were presented in the scientific journal Science: the health conditions of the first children treated are stable.

Fundraising

Telethon’s fundraising activity takes place, as well as with traditional channels such as 5 per 1000 and spontaneous donations, through specific agreements with supporting companies and with the creation of ad hoc events. The main fundraising event is the traditional December TV marathon organized annually by Rai since 1990. After the death of Fabrizio Frizzi, testimonial of the research for years, from 2018 Antonella Clerici becomes the new testimonial.

The Foundation also makes use of a network of volunteers and dialogue workers.

In the 2013/14 budget year, Telethon allocated 77% of the funds raised through donations and the support of the partners to finance the research, a percentage in line with the internationally recognized criteria of the Charity Navigator, the organization that in the United States, it evaluates non-profit organizations.

    Your wordpress site is very simplistic – hope you don’t mind me asking what theme
