POSTE ITALIANE 5^ emissione anno 2019 “francobollo dedicato all’Abbazia di Sant’Andrea – Vercelli, nell’VIII centenario della fondazione.”
Il Ministero emette il 19 febbraio 2019 un francobollo ordinario appartenente alla serie tematica “Il patrimonio artistico e culturale italiano” dedicato all’Abbazia di Sant’Andrea di Vercelli, nell’VIII centenario della fondazione, relativo al valore della tariffa B zona 2.
La basilica di Sant’Andrea è uno dei monumenti più importanti e conosciuti della città di Vercelli. Si tratta di un esempio precoce di architettura gotica italiana, ispirato a modelli cistercensi. Ha la dignità di basilica minore.
Fu fondata nel 1219 per volontà del cardinale Guala Bicchieri e completata nel 1227. In essa si fondono in modo paradigmatico la tradizione romanica (rintracciabile nella facciata a capanna e nelle loggette ad archetti) e i nuovi influssi del gotico europeo. La facciata stretta tra due torri (caso piuttosto raro in Italia), presenta tre portali strombati. Due fasci di colonnine attorniano il portale di centro e sfociano nel più basso dei due ordini di loggette che separano la facciata vera e propria da un frontone triangolare di ispirazione classicheggiante. L’ampio rosone è posto all’incrocio delle diagonali che fendono la facciata. Il tracciato è razionalmente proporzionato, “lucido come un teorema e tuttavia pieno di contenuta tensione: o come una verità logica intuita nell’estasi” (Giulio Carlo Argan). Ampio valore è poi stato dato dal progettista alla qualità cromatica dei materiali usati: c’è il bianco dell’intonaco, il rosso del mattone, il verde delle sagomature. All’esterno, spiccano il tiburio ottagonale, sormontato da un’alta lanterna, e gli archi rampanti.
Geza de Francovich attribuisce la lunetta del portale centrale della basilica (che rappresenta il martirio che l’apostolo Andrea subì in croce a Patrasso) all’architetto e scultore Benedetto Antelami, mentre Argan attribuisce ad Antelami l’intera progettazione.
L’interno è a croce latina commissa, mentre il coro ha forma rettangolare.

POSTE ITALIANE 5th issue year 2019 “stamp dedicated to the Abbey of Sant’Andrea – Vercelli, in the VIII centenary of the foundation.”
The Office sends forth February 19 th 2019 a belonging ordinary postage stamp to the thematic series “The patrimony artistic and cultural Italian” devoted to the abbey of Sant’Andrea of Vercelli, in the centenary VIII of the foundation, related to the value of the rate B zone 2.
The basilica of Sant’Andrea is one of the most important and known monuments in the city of Vercelli. It deals with a precocious example of Italian Gothic architecture, inspired to models cistercensi. It has the dignity of smaller basilica. In 1219 was founded for wish of the cardinal Guala Bicchieri and completed in the 1227. In it they are melted in paradigmatic way the Romanesque (traceable in the façade to hut and in the bows loggette) tradition and the new influences of the Gothic European. The narrow façade among two towers (rather rare case in Italy), introduces three splayed portals. Two bundles of mullions surround the portal of center and they flow in the lowest some two orders of loggette that separate the real façade from a triangular pediment of inspiration classicheggiante. The ample rose window is set to the intersection of the diagonals that you/they split the façade. The layout is rationally proportionate, “shiny as a theorem and nevertheless full of contained tension: or as a logical truth realized in the ecstasy” (Giulio Charles Argan). Ample value has been given then by the planner to the chromatic quality of the used materials: there is the white of the plaster, the red of the brick, the green of the sagomatures. To the outside, they detach the octagonal tiburio, surmounted by a tall lantern and the rampant arcs.
Geza de Francovich attributes the fanlight of the central portal of the basilica (what it represents the martyrdom that the apostle Andrew suffered in cross to Patrasso) to the architect and sculptor Benedetto Antelami, while Argan attributes to Antelami the whole planning.
The inside is to Latin cross commissa, while the choir has rectangular form.
