Title: Postage stamp belonging to the “Sport” series dedicated to Vittorio Pozzo, on the fiftieth anniversary of his death.

On 21 December 2018 the Ministry issued an ordinary stamp belonging to the thematic series “Lo Sport” dedicated to Vittorio Pozzo, on the fiftieth anniversary of his death, concerning the value of the tariff B.

Vittorio Giuseppe Luigi Pozzo (Turin, 2 March 1886 – Turin, 21 December 1968) was a football coach, Italian footballer and journalist, technical commissioner of the Italian national team in the thirties and forties, and the only coach who won two editions of the world, however consecutive. On his first victory in the Rimet Cup of 1934 was made in 1990 the television miniseries The color of victory.

Career

Vittorio Pozzo was born from a family of Biella origins, specifically from Ponderano and of modest economic conditions. He attended the Cavour High School in Turin, his hometown; later he studied languages and played football in France, Switzerland and England, particularly loving this last country and trying to steal and make his own the secrets of albionic soccer. A football fan and a fan of FC Torinese, at just eleven years with some friends he sold some Latin books to see the first football match played in Italy, Genoa-Representation Turin which took place on the day of the 1898 epiphany in Genoa and was won by the Turin team. As a footballer he was a member of the Grasshoppers National Reserve team (1905-1906), which he left to return to his Turin, where he helped found the Torino Football Club, a team in which he played for five seasons, until he retired from competitive activity. 1911, and of which he was technical director from 1912 to 1922. After completing his studies, he joined Pirelli, where he became a manager, a position he left to assume that of sole commissioner of the Italian national, accepting him with the unique and singular condition of not being paid. . Pozzo was nominated for the first time technical commissioner of the national football team during the Olympics in Stockholm, in June 1912: it was the absolute debut for an Italian selection in an official competition. The team was eliminated in the first round losing 3-2 with Finland after extra time. Pozzo resigned and returned to work at Pirelli; the national team returned to the so-called “technical commission”, a curious committee composed of various federal executives, referees, players, former footballers, coaches and journalists. Throughout its first period the national team was led by this heterogeneous group of variable composition: Pozzo was in fact the only person to play the role of single commissioner until the late forties, with the brief exceptions of Augustus Rangone (1925-1928 ) and Carlo Carcano (1928-1929). Pozzo took part in the First World War as an Alpine lieutenant. This experience marked him deeply: he drew an experience of moral rigor and education to the modesty and to the Spartan essentiality of the trench life that he constantly applied to human relationships and to the sporting profession. In 1921, Pozzo was instructed by the Federcalcio to study a project to reform the league to overcome the tensions between the big teams and the smaller companies, since the former believed that the number of participants in the championship should be reduced. Po’s mediation failed and the crisis resulted in the split between the FIGC and the ICC, which returned the following year. In 1924, on the occasion of the Parisian Olympics, Pozzo was again appointed as a single commissioner. This time the Azzurri managed to get to the quarters, where they were beaten for 2 to 1 by Switzerland. Even after this defeat Vittorio Pozzo resigned and returned to devote himself to his work and his wife, who shortly afterwards lost for an illness. After the death of his wife, Pozzo moved to Milan, where his work in Pirelli, alongside that of journalist for La Stampa in Turin, which continued almost to death.

Ten years of gold

In 1929 the then president of the FIGC Leandro Arpinati asked him to lead the blue team again and Pozzo, for the third time, accepted, kicking off the golden age of the Italian national team. In the turn of a decade and inspired by the tactic scheme successfully applied in Juventus coached by Carlo Carcano, whose players formed the backbone, Pozzo collected a palmarès hardly equaled. In fact, he won two world titles in 1934 and 1938, an Olympic gold in 1936 (the only one in Italian football) and two International Cups (the forerunner of the European Football Championship) in 1930 and 1935. The only victory that escaped Italy of Pozzo of that unrepeatable decade was that of the second edition of the International Cup of 1932 in which Italy ranked second however. Vittorio Pozzo was also the first to make systematic use of “retreats”, periods of isolation in preparation for a sporting event. The venues normally chosen were very essential residences, in homage to the military style of the CT, but he was also a master in creating group spirit and in cementing personal relationships, preventing bad moods and tearing in the locker room. Regarding the criticisms received for having summoned players in the victorious world of 1934, referring to the fact that they were serving in the army, he said: “If they can die for Italy, they can also play for Italy”. From November 24, 1935 to July 20, 1939, Pozzo produced a series of 30 consecutive useful results.

Tactics

Until the 1930s, the most common tactic in football was the so-called Cambridge pyramid, a 2-3-5 pyramid-shaped inverted pyramid that had its summit in the goalkeeper. Pozzo and Meisl (National Austrian CT) developed the idea of an alignment with two backward defenders and a central player placed before the defense, between the two medians. This player, called precisely the Methodist mid-Methodist, was the cornerstone of the maneuver and was a true ancestor of the Italian “director”. With respect to the system the forward movement of the central defender provided more support to the medians. Finally, the retreat towards the median of the two inside forward, the “internal attackers” of the pyramid (also called “half wings”) gave rise to a formation of the type 2-3-2-3, or “WW”, because it repeated on the field the shape of these letters. In this way a numerical superiority was created in midfield: the defense was more protected and the counterattacks were faster and more effective. However, proving not to have a preconceived view of tactics, Pozzo was able to adapt his convictions: over time, in fact, the importance of the inner half wings grew in his game, also because he had two very strong performers of that role: Giuseppe Meazza and Giovanni Ferrari , which were not by chance the only two permanent holders of both world champions selections.

The final

On pressure from Federcalcio Pozzo resigned as technical commissioner on August 5, 1948. He was considered a man of the past, no longer suited to cover his role. Furthermore, he remained a staunch supporter of the validity of the method, while the most successful teams at the time applied the system. Among these, paradoxically, there was the Grande Torino, the backbone of his national team in the post-World War II years. At the time of the retreat, Pozzo had been a national technical commissioner for 6,927 days: a record beaten only by Enzo Bearzot. He had collected 97 benches with the national team, with a total of 65 wins, 17 draws and 15 losses. His percentage of victories is equal to 67.01% of the games played: a record among the blue CTs. His last, excruciating, official act, in 1949, was the recognition of the torn bodies of the players of the Grande Torino, his friends and students, who died on 4 May in the Superga tragedy. In 1948 on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of F.I.G.C. he was awarded the title of pioneer of Italian football. In the years between 1948 and 1958 Vittorio Pozzo participated rather assiduously, as a director in the technical directorate, to the creation of the Federal Technical Center of Coverciano. This activity took place thanks to the express request made to the Federcalcio by his friend and sports manager Luigi Ridolfi who had conceived the Technical Center and who took care of the construction until his death. Pozzo died on 21 December 1968, at the age of 82, in Turin and his remains rest in the cemetery of Ponderano (BI), the country of origin of his family. In 1986 he was named after the then Stadio Comunale di Torino (nowadays Stadio Olimpico), while in June 2008 it was the turn of the Biella stadium and, previously, the one of Boscoreale. In 2011 he was awarded a Recognition in memory in the Hall of fame of Italian football.  From 2016 his memorabilia are exhibited in Ponderano in a museum dedicated to him.
