  • The vignette: depicts Cala Marinella, one of the most enchanting coves of the Zingaro Nature Reserve, on which stands out, in the foreground on the right, a dwarf palm, also commonly known as the palm of San Pietro, typical of the Reserve. Below, on the left, there is a map with the profile of Sicily in which the geographical area of reference is highlighted. The stamp is completed by the legend “NATURAL RESERVE OF THE ZINGARO”, the writing “ITALY” and the tariff indication “B”.

The Zingaro oriented nature reserve is a protected natural area located in the municipalities of Castellammare del Golfo and San Vito Lo Capo, in the province of Trapani and managed by the Regional State Forests of the Sicily Region.

History

The Zingaro coast is one of the very few stretches of coast in Sicily that is not contaminated by the presence of a coastal road.

The territory was inhabited by a last peasant family until about 1960, in the house that today is the museum of weaving, renovated in 2013. The inhabitants used mules to transport goods and water. Today, for the transport of waste and goods in general, mules are always used, the only means of transport possible.

In 1976 the works for the construction of the Scopello-San Vito Lo Capo coastal road had already begun, but following a series of initiatives from the environmentalist world, culminating in a very participatory protest march that took place on May 18, 1980, the Azienda Regionale State Forests of the Sicilian Region undertook to expropriate the area of the Zingaro recognized of great environmental interest.

With the regional law 98/1981, the reserve was officially established, the first nature reserve in Sicily, entrusted to the management of the Regional State Forestry Company.

Territory

The reserve extends in the western part of the Gulf of Castellammare, in the peninsula of San Vito Lo Capo that overlooks the Tyrrhenian between Castellammare del Golfo and Trapani. The territory falls partly in the municipality of San Vito Lo Capo and partly in the municipality of Castellammare; it stretches along 7 km of coastline and almost 1,700 hectares of unspoiled nature.

The coast is made up of Quaternary limestone and Mesozoic limestone reliefs of a dolomitic nature, with cliffs that from a maximum height of 913 m (Monte Speziale) slope steeply towards the sea, interspersed with numerous coves.

Flora

The reserve is home to about 670 plant infrageneric taxa, some of which are endemic and rare. Of these, 502 are dicotyledons, 153 monocots, 3 gymnosperms and 10 pteridophytes. The lichen flora is of considerable interest; 27 species of fungi (macromycetes) have also been found in the territory of the reserve, of which the most representative family is that of the Tricholomataceae. The original landscape consisted mostly of evergreen Mediterranean forest (xerophilous forest) whose traces are still represented by areas of holm oak, where small ferns, cyclamen, butcher’s broom bushes (Ruscus aculeatus) and, at the western limit of the reserve, find hospitality also from fragments of cork oak, evidence of that cork forest formation which has now almost completely disappeared in the rest of western Sicily.

The currently most peculiar aspect of the reserve is however the dwarf palm garrigue, which characterizes large areas of the coastal landscape and which in the Zingaro district, where there are specimens of Chamaerops humilis that reach 2–3 m in height, assumes relevance of scrub .

Fauna

39 species of birds nest in the reserve including the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus), one of the last ten pairs present in Sicily of the Bonelli’s eagle (Hieraaetus fasciatus), the buzzard (Buteo buteo) and the kestrel (Falco tinnunculus). During the migration period, specimens of golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) and honey buzzards (Pernis apivorus) were also sighted. Other birds present are the raven (Corvus corax), the black bunting (Emberiza cirlus), the blue rock thrush (Monticola solitarius), the rock partridge (Alectoris graeca), the gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus), the wild pigeon (Columba livia), the common swift (Apus apus), the pale swift (Apus pallidus), the hooded crow (Corvus cornix), the magpie (Pica pica), the goldfinch (Carduelis carduelis) and the nightingale (Luscinia megarhynchos). Among the nocturnal birds there are the owl (Athene noctua) and the owl (Strix aluco).

Among the mammals the rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) and the fox (Vulpes vulpes) are very common. There are also the weasel (Mustela nivalis), the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) and the porcupine (Hystrix cristata); among the rodents, the Savi vole (Microtus savii) and the oak mouse (Eliomys quercinus). In the numerous caves in the Reserve there are eight different species of bats including the rare brown owl (Plecotus auritus), the horseshoe (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), the miniopter (Miniopterus schreibersii) and the albolimbato bat (Pipistrellus kuhlii).

Accommodation

Inside the reserve there are the Naturalistic Museum, the Museum of Marine Activities, the Museum of Peasant Civilization, the Museum of Manna, the Environmental Education Center, two equipped areas and the ancient rural buildings used as shelters (contrada Sughero), where it is also possible to stay overnight on request.

There are 3 different paths: the Coastal one, the most popular that winds for about 7 km and connects the entrance of Scopello (south entrance) to that of San Vito Lo Capo (north entrance), lasting about 2 hours; that of Mezza Costa, and it is the most panoramic path. It has a distance of 8.5 km. Duration 4h 30m.

From the south entrance of the reserve you reach the Visitor Center; from here a steep uphill path, softened by some hairpin bends, leads to the beginning of the mid-slope path (290 m), which runs through the reserve from south to north, parallel to the coastal path. Leaving a detour on the left that leads to Bosco di Scardina (high paths), continue straight until you reach Pizzo del Corvo; lastly we find the Sentiero Alto, which is undoubtedly the most challenging path, has a length: 17.5 km. Duration: 7 h

COAST OF THE ETRUSCANS

The Etruscan Coast includes the entire continental territory of the province of Livorno, affecting from south to north the municipalities of Piombino, San Vincenzo, Castagneto Carducci, Bibbona, Cecina, Rosignano Marittimo and Livorno, as well as the municipalities of the hinterland, or Collesalvetti , Sassetta, Suvereto and Campiglia Marittima.

It is so named for the numerous Etruscan necropolis present mainly between the Gulf of Baratti and Populonia, which was originally the only Etruscan city built along the coastal strip; the name subsequently extended to the entire coast of the province of Livorno, largely corresponding to the Maremma of Livorno (the ancient Pisan Maremma).

The coast is mainly low and sandy in the stretch between Rosignano Solvay to the north and the Gulf of Baratti to the south, with beaches generally of golden color, with the exception of the coastal stretch between Rosignano Solvay and Vada where the suggestive White Beaches extend.

Further north, the pleasant promontories of Castiglioncello and Quercianella mark the coast near Livorno, behind which the so-called Livorno Hills extend. To the south, on the other hand, rises the promontory of Piombino, on whose top rises Populonia, which divides the Gulf of Baratti from Piombino itself, at the same time marking the border between the Ligurian Sea and the Tyrrhenian Sea.
