Il Tetradramma di Gela, è un’antica moneta d’argento coniata a Gela nel V sec. a.C., periodo in cui la città grazie ai tiranni Ippocrate e Gelone raggiunse una collocazione di primo piano nel Mediterraneo, una delle monete più conosciute con la protome del toro “androprosopo”, cioé a testa umana con attributi taurini, personificazione del fiume Gela ed emblema della monetazione geloa. Su tale motivo gli antichi maestri incisori di Gela esercitarono tra il VI e il V secolo a.C. la loro capacità di creare capolavori tra i più ammirati della numismatica siceliota. La moneta in foto, si trova nel Museo Archeologico di Gela, fa parte di una delle più importanti e ammirate collezioni del mondo, tant’è che, ad esempio, la Repubblica africana del Niger nel 1975 ha emesso un francobollo con l’immagine della moneta.
Le antiche monete del conio gelese da più di un secolo rivestono, per la loro valenza storica e culturale, una notevole attenzione da parte di eminenti studiosi, archeologi e ricercatori di diverse nazionalità. Gli esemplari di Gela si trovano, inoltre, sparsi in tutto il mondo, in collezioni private e pubbliche; in particolare, non esiste un museo che non possieda una o più copie della monetazione geloa (si citano ad esempio i musei di New York, Oxford, Parigi, Vienna, Zurigo, Atene, Berlino, Berna, Cambridge, Cyrene, Londra, Madrid, Tubinga, Stoccarda, Copenaghen, Hamburgo, Boston, Hanover, Monaco, Praga, Budapest, Vaticano, Basilea, Bruxelles, Klangefurt, Varsavia, ecc., oltre a quelli italiani più importanti di Firenze, Milano, Napoli, Siracusa, Agrigento, Torino, Bologna, ecc.). Inoltre, informazioni sulla monetazione, e non solo, di Gela si possono riscontrare in Internet su siti Web di cui alcuni realizzati da università americane con i progetti Perseus e Medea.

The Tetradramma di Gela is an ancient silver coin minted in Gela in the fifth century. BC, a period in which the city thanks to the tyrants Hippocrates and Gelone reached a prominent position in the Mediterranean, one of the best known coins with the protome of the “androprosopus” bull, that is, a human head with taurine attributes, personification of the Gela river and emblem of the geloa coinage. On this reason the ancient engravers of Gela practiced between the sixth and fifth centuries BC. their ability to create some of the most admired masterpieces of Sicilian numismatics. The coin in the photo, located in the Archaeological Museum of Gela, is part of one of the most important and admired collections in the world, so much so that, for example, the African Republic of Niger in 1975 issued a stamp with the image of the currency.
Due to their historical and cultural value, the ancient coins of the Gelese coinage for more than a century have received considerable attention from eminent scholars, archaeologists and researchers of different nationalities.
