Titolo: Senso Civico: ” La Comunità di Sant’Egidio”

Le Poste Italiane hanno emesso il 1° settembre 2018 un francobollo ordinario appartenente alla serie tematica “Il Senso civico” dedicato alla Comunità di Sant’Egidio, nel cinquantenario della fondazione, relativo al valore della tariffa B (corrispondente ad € 1.10).

La Comunità di Sant’Egidio è un movimento laicale di ispirazione cristiana cattolica, dedito alla preghiera e alla comunicazione del Vangelo, che si definisce come “associazione pubblica di laici della Chiesa“.

Nata in Italia nel 1968, è oggi diffusa in più di 70 paesi in diversi continenti. È riconosciuta come “Associazione internazionale di fedeli” dal Pontificio consiglio per i laici.

La Comunità di Sant’Egidio nasce a Roma nel 1968 per iniziativa di Andrea Riccardi che, nel clima di rinnovamento del Concilio Vaticano II, comincia a riunire un gruppo di liceali, com’era lui stesso, per ascoltare e mettere in pratica il Vangelo. Nel giro di pochi anni la loro esperienza si diffonde in diversi ambienti studenteschi e si concretizza in attività a favore degli emarginati. Nei quartieri popolari della periferia romana inizia il lavoro di evangelizzazione che porta alla nascita di comunità di adulti. Il primo dei servizi della comunità, quando ancora non aveva preso il nome di Sant’Egidio, fu la scuola popolare per i bambini emarginati delle baraccopoli romane, come il “Cinodromo”, lungo il Tevere, nella zona sud di Roma.                                                                       Dal 1973, nella chiesa di Sant’Egidio in Trastevere, la prima chiesa della Comunità, si dà il via alla consuetudine della preghiera comunitaria serale, che da allora accompagna la vita di tutte le comunità.                                                                                                                                                                                               Nella seconda metà degli anni Settanta, la Comunità comincia a radicarsi anche in altre città italiane e, poi negli anni Ottanta, a diffondersi in Africa, America e Asia. Sin dalle origini, il servizio ai poveri e il sostegno ai diritti e alla dignità della persona caratterizza, assieme alla preghiera e alla comunicazione del Vangelo, la vita della Comunità che ha costruito forme di aiuto e di amicizia per fronteggiare diverse situazioni di povertà e disagio (anziani soli e non autosufficienti, immigrati e persone senza fissa dimora, malati terminali e malati di Aids, bambini a rischio di devianza e di emarginazione, nomadi e portatori di handicap, tossicodipendenti, vittime della guerra, carcerati e condannati a morte).

On 1 September 2018 the Italian Post Office issued an ordinary stamp belonging to the thematic series “Il senso civico” dedicated to the Community of Sant’Egidio, on the fiftieth anniversary of the foundation, concerning the value of tariff B (corresponding to € 1.10).

The Community of Sant’Egidio is a lay movement of Catholic Christian inspiration, dedicated to prayer and to the communication of the Gospel, which defines itself as a “public association of lay people of the Church”.

Founded in Italy in 1968, it is now widespread in more than 70 countries on different continents. It is recognized as an “International Association of the Faithful” by the Pontifical Council for the Laity.

The Community of Sant’Egidio was founded in Rome in 1968 on the initiative of Andrea Riccardi who, in the atmosphere of renewal of the Second Vatican Council, began to gather a group of high school students, as he was himself, to listen and put the Gospel into practice. Within a few years their experience spreads in different student environments and takes the form of activities in favor of the marginalized. In the popular neighborhoods of the Roman suburbs, the work of evangelization begins that leads to the birth of adult communities. The first of the community services, when it had not yet taken the name of Sant’Egidio, was the popular school for the marginalized children of Roman shantytowns, such as the “Cinodromo”, along the Tiber, in the south of Rome. Since 1973, in the church of Sant’Egidio in Trastevere, the first church of the Community, the habit of evening community prayer has begun, which since then has accompanied the life of all the communities. In the second half of the seventies, the community began to take root in other Italian cities and, then in the eighties, to spread in Africa, America and Asia. From the beginning, the service to the poor and support for the rights and dignity of the person characterizes, together with prayer and the communication of the Gospel, the life of the community that has built forms of help and friendship to face various situations of poverty and hardship. (lonely and non self-sufficient elderly, immigrants and homeless people, terminally ill and AIDS patients, children at risk of deviance and marginalization, nomads and disabled people, drug addicts, victims of war, prisoners and condemned to death).
