Grammichele è un comune italiano di 13.274 abitanti della città metropolitana di Catania in Sicilia.

Di pianta esagonale, si trova alle pendici dei monti Iblei e dista 13 km da Caltagirone, 43 da Ragusa, 51 da Gela, 68 da Catania.

Dopo soli tre mesi dal terremoto dell’11 gennaio del 1693 che distrusse insieme a molti altri centri della Val di Noto anche Occhiolà (la greca Echetla o Eketla), il principe Carlo Maria Carafa Branciforti fondava su un suo feudo a circa 2 km dalla collinetta di Occhiolà “Grammichele”.

Opera dello stesso principe, coadiuvato da frà Michele da Ferla, è la pianta esagonale della nuova città, unico esempio di architettura razionale in Italia insieme alla fortezza di Palmanova.

Il perimetro è costituito da un esagono avente al centro una piazza anch’essa esagonale con gli angoli chiusi estesa 8.164,80 m². Cinque arterie anulari si snodano attorno alla piazza centrale, sede della Chiesa Madre e del Palazzo Municipale, e da questa si irradiano altre sei arterie perpendicolari alle prime che si immettono in altrettante piazze rettangolari ad angoli chiusi con accesso al centro dei lati.

Queste piazze sono a loro volta generatrici di altrettanti quartieri rettangolari periferici a rete viaria ortogonale disposti tutt’intorno alla zona centrale esagonale.

Grammichele is an Italian town of 13,274 inhabitants of the metropolitan city of Catania in Sicily.

With a hexagonal plan, it is located on the slopes of the Iblei mountains and is 13 km from Caltagirone, 43 from Ragusa, 51 from Gela, 68 from Catania.

After only three months after the earthquake of 11 January 1693 that destroyed with many other towns of the Val di Noto also Occhiolà (the Greek Echetla or Eketla), Prince Carlo Maria Carafa Branciforti founded on a feud about 2 km from the hillock of Occhiolà “Grammichele”.

The same prince’s work, assisted by Fra Michele da Ferla, is the hexagonal plan of the new city, the only example of rational architecture in Italy together with the fortress of Palmanova.

The perimeter consists of a hexagon with a hexagonal square in the center, with enclosed corners of 8,164,80 m². Five annular arteries wind around the central square, home of the Mother Church and the Town Hall, and from this another six arteries perpendicular to the first radiate, which are placed in as many rectangular squares with closed corners with access to the center of the sides.

These squares are in turn generating as many rectangular suburban neighborhoods with orthogonal road network arranged all around the central hexagonal area.
