Il Ministero dello Sviluppo con le Poste Italiane ha emesso il 28 aprile 2019 un francobollo ordinario appartenente alla serie tematica “IL SENSO CIVICO” dedicato al Circolo S. Pietro, nel 150° anniversario della fondazione relativo al valore della tariffa B
Il Circolo San Pietro è un’associazione pubblica di fedeli della Diocesi di Roma, iscritta al nº 1 del Registro delle Associazioni di Volontariato dello Stato della Città del Vaticano.
Storia
Il Circolo San Pietro è stato fondato il 28 aprile 1869 da un gruppo di giovani dell’alta borghesia e delle nobili famiglie romane che volevano testimoniare con attività pratiche l’attaccamento alla Chiesa e al Papa in un momento, quello del Risorgimento, tanto delicato per le relazioni tra Italia e Stato Pontificio.
Messo a conoscenza dell’iniziativa, Pio IX ricevette in udienza privata i giovani, guidati dall’assistente ecclesiastico Domenico Maria Jacobini, che esposero al Pontefice l’intenzione del sodalizio di sostenere il Magistero della Chiesa attraverso la carità e la presenza attiva nei dibattiti politici e culturali. Pio IX incoraggiò l’operato dei soci fondatori, spronandoli ad intraprendere il cammino della carità. Nel 1877 lo stesso Pio IX donò al sodalizio le “pentole degli Zuavi” in modo che si potesse dare pratica attuazione alle mensa dei poveri, divenute celebri come “cucine economiche”.
Da allora, il Circolo San Pietro si è posto con continuità al servizio dei bisognosi. Suoi scopi sono la formazione spirituale e morale dei soci, la promozione di orientamenti di vita cristiana e l’impegno di apostolato nei vari campi della vita sociale. Fin dalla fondazione, il motto è “Preghiera, Azione, Sacrifizio”.
Sin dalla sua fondazione, hanno fatto parte del Circolo personalità di rilievo del panorama culturale, politico, aristocratico ed ecclesiasitco romano. Prima di salire al soglio pontificio, i papi Benedetto XV, Pio XI, Pio XII e Paolo VI furono soci del Circolo. Attualmente il Presidente del Circolo è il Duca Leopoldo Torlonia e l’Assistente Ecclesiastico è Mons. Franco Camaldo.
La Presidenza della Repubblica ha conferito la Medaglia d’oro al merito civile al Circolo S. Pietro. Assegnato con Decreto del Presidente della Repubblica, su proposta del Ministro dell’Interno, l’alto riconoscimento premia «le persone, gli Enti e i Corpi che si siano prodigati, con eccezionale senso di abnegazione, nell’alleviare le altrui sofferenze o, comunque, nel soccorrere chi si trovi in stato di bisogno». L’attestato di pubblica benemerenza è concesso dal Ministro dell’Interno.
«È con profonda riconoscenza», ha dichiarato il Presidente del Circolo S. Pietro, Leopoldo Torlonia, «che accogliamo la Medaglia d’oro al merito civile, un’onorificenza che suggella degnamente l’attività caritativa svolta nella città di Roma da 150 anni, tenendo viva, giorno dopo giorno, la vocazione a stare dalla parte dei deboli, degli esclusi, di chi sperimenta situazioni di povertà materiale e spirituale. L’augurio per il conferimento di questa onorificenza, per cui ringrazio il Presidente Sergio Mattarella, è che funga da ulteriore stimolo per i soci a rimanere sempre all’altezza di un servizio prestato a nome e per conto del Santo Padre».

Luminosa e straordinaria testimonianza di solidarietà sociale, ispirata ai più alti valori di carità cristiana che l’Ente, nel corso di 150 anni di storia, ha saputo efficacemente dimostrare, divenendo un sicuro punto di riferimento nella Città di Roma. Innumerevoli sono le opere di beneficenza, sostentamento, assistenza, anche sanitaria, accoglienza in favore delle persone più povere e bisognose, nonché delle famiglie dei piccoli pazienti dell’Ospedale pediatrico “Bambino Gesù”, assicurando, altresì, con encomiabile impegno la partecipazione alle attività caritative della Santa Sede. Mirabile esempio di straordinarie virtù civiche, morali e spirituali, orientate all’esaltazione dell’amore per il prossimo e alla difesa della dignità umana.
Sede
Negli anni della sua attività, il Circolo San Pietro ha avuto in tutto undici sedi, la prima delle quali al secondo piano di Palazzo Lancellotti ai Coronari. In fasi successive, si spostò in Via della Scrofa e in Piazza Sant’Apollinare. La sede del Circolo è attualmente è in Palazzo San Calisto, Piazza S. Calisto 16.
Attività
Il Circolo San Pietro, che conta circa 450 soci, svolge le sue opere attraverso commissioni e sezioni, ognuna delle quali è preposta allo svolgimento di un compito specifico.
Tra le opere umanitarie di maggior rilievo si annoverano le cucine economiche e gli asili notturni per persone senza fissa dimora, l’Hospice Sacro Cuore per le cure palliative, la casa-famiglia intitolata a Giovanni Paolo II per i genitori dei bambini ricoverati presso l’Ospedale Pediatrico del Bambino Gesù, un centro polifunzionale che fornisce assistenza di carattere psicologico, giuridico ed amministrativo, la raccolta dell’Obolo di San Pietro, le vendite di beneficenza, il sostegno alle attività della Associazione Italiana Sindrome di Williams, e l’assistenza al St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor di Gulu (Uganda). Diverse decine di migliaia sono le persone assistite dal Circolo ogni anno.
Dal 1955 è affidata al Circolo San Pietro la Chiesa di Santa Maria della Pietà al Colosseo, situata all’interno del Colosseo. Il Circolo San Pietro si occupa inoltre dal 1888 del servizio d’onore al Pontefice attraverso l’accoglienza dei fedeli, dei pellegrini, delle personalità e delle autorità che partecipano alle celebrazioni liturgiche presiedute dal Papa nelle Basiliche Papali.

On 28 April 2019 the Ministry of Development with the Italian Post Office issued an ordinary stamp belonging to the thematic series “THE CIVIC SENSE” dedicated to the Circolo S. Pietro, on the 150th anniversary of the foundation relating to the value of tariff B
The Circolo San Pietro is a public association of the faithful of the Diocese of Rome, registered in No. 1 of the Register of Voluntary Associations of the Vatican City State.
History
The Circolo San Pietro was founded on April 28, 1869 by a group of young bourgeoisie and noble Roman families who wanted to witness the Church’s and the Pope’s attachment at a time, that of the Risorgimento, so delicate for relations between Italy and the Papal States.
Having learned of the initiative, Pius IX received in private audience the young people, led by the ecclesiastical assistant Domenico Maria Jacobini, who exposed to the Pope the intention of the association to support the Magisterium of the Church through charity and active presence in political debates and cultural. Pius IX encouraged the work of the founding members, encouraging them to embark on the path of charity. In 1877 the same Pius IX donated to the association the “pots of the Zuaves” so that it could be put into practice the soup kitchen, which became famous as “cheap kitchens”.
Since then, the Circolo San Pietro has continued to serve the needy. Its purposes are the spiritual and moral formation of the members, the promotion of orientations of Christian life and the commitment of the apostolate in the various fields of social life. Since the foundation, the motto is “Prayer, Action, Sacrifice”.
Since its foundation, important personalities of the Roman cultural, political, aristocratic and ecclesiastical panorama have been part of the Circle. Before ascending to the papal throne, the popes Benedict XV, Pius XI, Pius XII and Paul VI were members of the Circle. Currently the President of the Circle is the Duke Leopoldo Torlonia and the Ecclesiastical Assistant is Mons. Franco Camaldo.
The Presidency of the Republic awarded the Gold Medal for Civil Merit to the Circolo S. Pietro. Assigned by Decree of the President of the Republic, on the proposal of the Minister of the Interior, the high recognition rewards «the people, the Entities and the Bodies that have done their utmost, with an exceptional sense of self-denial, in alleviating the suffering of others or, anyway in helping those in need “. The certificate of public merit is granted by the Minister of the Interior.
“It is with deep gratitude”, declared the President of the Circolo S. Pietro, Leopoldo Torlonia, “that we welcome the Gold Medal for civil merit, an honor that seals worthily the charitable activity carried out in the city of Rome for 150 years , keeping alive, day after day, the vocation to be on the side of the weak, the excluded, those who experience situations of material and spiritual poverty. The wish for the conferment of this honor, for which I thank the President Sergio Mattarella, is that it acts as a further incentive for the members to always remain at the height of a service provided on behalf of the Holy Father ».

Luminous and extraordinary testimony of social solidarity, inspired by the highest values of Christian charity that the Body, in the course of 150 years of history, has been able to effectively demonstrate, becoming a sure point of reference in the City of Rome. Countless are the works of charity, sustenance, assistance, even health care, reception in favor of the poorest and neediest people, as well as of the families of the small patients of the “Bambino Gesù” Children’s Hospital, also ensuring participation in the activities with commendable commitment charities of the Holy See. Seat
During the years of its activity, the Circolo San Pietro had eleven locations in all, the first of which on the second floor of Palazzo Lancellotti ai Coronari. In later stages, he moved to Via della Scrofa and Piazza Sant’Apollinare. The seat of the Circle is currently in Palazzo San Calisto, Piazza S. Calisto 16.
Activities
The Circolo San Pietro, which has about 450 members, carries out its works through commissions and sections, each of which is responsible for carrying out a specific task.
The most important humanitarian works include the economic kitchens and night-time nurseries for the homeless, the Hospice Sacred Heart for palliative care, the family home dedicated to John Paul II for the parents of children hospitalized at the Pediatric Hospital of the Bambino Gesù, a multi-purpose center that provides psychological, legal and administrative assistance, the collection of St. Peter’s Obolo, charity sales, support for the activities of the Italian Association of Williams Syndrome, and assistance to the St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor of Gulu (Uganda). Several tens of thousands of people are assisted by the club every year.
Since 1955 the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà has been entrusted to the Circolo San Pietro at the Colosseum, located inside the Colosseum. Since 1888, the Circolo San Pietro has been dealing with the honor service to the Pope through the reception of the faithful, pilgrims, personalities and authorities participating in the liturgical celebrations presided over by the Pope in the Papal Basilicas.
