On 19 March 2019, the Ministry issued an ordinary stamp belonging to the thematic series “IL SENSO CIVICO” dedicated to Giuseppe Diana, on the 25th anniversary of the disappearance related to the value of tariff B.

Giuseppe Diana, also called Peppe Diana or Peppino Diana (Casal di Principe, 4 July 1958 – Casal di Principe, 19 March 1994), was an Italian presbyter, writer and scout, murdered by the Camorra for his anti-mafia efforts.

Origins and formation

Giuseppe Diana was born in Casal di Principe, near Aversa, to a family of landowners. In 1968 he entered the seminary in Aversa: he attended the middle school and the classical high school. He then continued his theological studies at the seminary of Posillipo, home of the Pontifical Theological Faculty of Southern Italy. Here he graduated in biblical theology and then graduated in Philosophy at the University Federico II of Naples. In 1978 he joined the Italian Association of Catholic Guides and Scouts (AGESCI) where he worked as a foreman. In March 1982 he was ordained a priest.

The ecclesiastical career

Become an ecclesiastical assistant of the Scout Group of Aversa and later also assistant of the White Foulards sector. From 19 September 1989 he is pastor of the parish of San Nicola di Bari in Casal di Principe, his native country, to then also become secretary of the bishop of the diocese of Aversa, Monsignor Giovanni Gazza. He also teaches literary subjects at the legally recognized high school of the Francesco Caracciolo seminar, as well as Catholic religion at the state industrial technical institute Alessandro Volta and the Professional Hospitality Institute of Aversa.

The civil commitment

Don Peppino Diana tries to help people in the moments made difficult by the Camorra, during the years of absolute domination of the Camorra Casalese, mainly linked to the boss Francesco Schiavone, known as Sandokan. The men of the clan control not only the illicit traffics, but they have also infiltrated the local authorities and manage significant slices of legal economy, so much so that they become “camorra entrepreneurs”.

The ambush and death

At 7:20 am on March 19, 1994, the day of his name day, Giuseppe Diana was assassinated in the sacristy of the church of San Nicola di Bari in Casal di Principe, as he was about to celebrate Mass. A camorrista confronts him with a gun. The five bullets all go to sign: two in the head, one in the face, one in the hand and one in the neck. Don Peppe Diana dies instantly. The murder, of pure Camorra style, is a sensation all over Italy. A message of condolence is pronounced by Pope John Paul II during the Angelus of March 20, 1994: “« I feel the need to express once again the deep pain in me aroused by the news of the killing of Don Giuseppe Diana, pastor of the diocese of Aversa, struck by ruthless killers as she prepared to celebrate Holy Mass. In deploring this new heinous crime, I invite you to join me in the prayer of suffrage for the soul of the generous priest, engaged in pastoral service to his people. May the Lord let the sacrifice of this minister of his, an evangelical grain of wheat fallen into the earth, produce fruits of full conversion, of active harmony, of solidarity and of peace. “

The process

Since the beginning of the trial an attempt has been made to throw off investigations and to tarnish the figure of Don Peppe Diana, accusing him of being a frequent visitor to prostitutes, a pedophile and guardian of weapons destined to kill the prosecutor Cordova. In particular, the Corriere di Caserta, on the front page published the title “Don Diana was a Camorrist” and after a few days “Don Diana in bed with two women”, describing him not as a victim of the Camorra but as belonging to the clans.
